The 4.8 SR earthquake that occurred in Karangasem, Bali on October 16, 2021, caused major damage to the houses of people in Ban Village, Kubu District. This earthquake caused the water pipes - that carried water to the people’s houses - covered and buried deep into the dirt due to landslides and therefore badly damaged, this made access to clean water extremely difficult.
Currently the local government is focusing on infrastructure development after the earthquake. Ban village requires various materials to rebuild the village infrastructure. Previously, the village government conducted an assessment on the community needs. They found that water pipes were needed to channel clean water from water springs to the people's houses. The existence of water pipes can also provide sustainable benefits for the people.
Saturday, 6 November 2021 Westerlaken Foundation/Yayasan Bali Bersih and Crisis Kitchen Bali distributed 1300 meters of 1 inch (diam.) HDPE pipe with a thickness of PN 10 to Ban Village, Karangasem for post-earthquake infrastructure development/ construction.
These pipes were received by I Ketut Budayasa as the Ban Village Field Coordinator. The village government will make a list and distribute these pipes to channel water to the houses of people in need. The 1 inch (diam.) HDPE pipe with a thickness of PN 10 is considered suitable for use in Ban Village, because the water pressure tends to be low. On the other hand, the HDPE pipe is more flexible than a PVC pipe. So that when a landslide occurs again, this pipe will not easily be damaged.
Ketut thanked all donors who helped procure and distribute this water pipe. He said that the 1300-meter water pipe is very beneficial for the people of Ban Village.
Hopefully this donation will help the community to have an easier access to clean water.
