"Stranded Sperm Whales in Wates Yeh Malet Beach and Yeh Leh Beach"

Necropsy Unveils Surprising Discoveries for Marine Conservation

Denpasar, 04/08/2023

Yayasan Bali Bersih/Westerlaken Foundation has handled the case of two stranded sperm whales (Physeter macrocephalus) suspected to have washed ashore on Wates Yeh Malet Beach, Karangasem, and Yeh Leh Beach, Jembrana, Bali. Both whales have undergone necropsy processes by veterinary experts. The follow-up results regarding the necropsy of these whales have been obtained successfully, but the press release presenting these findings is still in the final stages before being published by BPSPL Denpasar.

A team of experts from veterinary and BPSPL Denpasar conducted a comprehensive investigation to understand the cause of death and the condition of the sperm whales stranded on both beaches. The astonishing findings from the necropsy are expected to provide valuable insights to researchers and environmental conservators about the health and status of these rare marine species.

Mr. Permana Yudiarso, S.T., M.T., who previously as the Head of BPSPL Denpasar (now succeeded by Ms. Getreda M. Hehanussa, S.Pi., M.Si.), stated that the issuance of the press release containing these findings must wait for the appropriate time. "We value the importance of providing accurate and comprehensive information to the public. Hence, we are conducting in-depth analysis and collaboration with other experts to ensure that our report is a reliable research result before issuing an official press release," said Mr. Permana Yudiarso, S.T., M.T.

As a leading maritime research institution in Indonesia, BPSPL Denpasar is committed to protecting and preserving marine biodiversity. The results of the necropsy are expected to contribute positively to conservation efforts and further understanding of sperm whales in Indonesian seawaters.

BPSPL Denpasar promises to announce the complete findings from the necropsy of the stranded sperm whales on Wates Beach and Yeh Leh Beach as soon as the analysis and press review are completed. The official press release containing these findings will be published and disseminated to the media and the public at large.
